How to prepare for the lactation consultation:

Office consults:

Please try and feed your baby 2 hours prior to visit. If this isn't possible and baby becomes hungry close to visit, please try to do a partial feed.

OUR OFFICE ADDRESS is 345 Plainfield Ave., Suite 201 in Edison, New Jersey. Parking and the entrance to the building are in the rear. Please feel free to use the elevator off the lobby for your convenience.  Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment time.

In-person visits include history taking, oral evaluation of baby, breastfeeding parent exam, observed feed with pre- and post-weights, experimenting with different techniques and practicing ones that work best. Parents will receive a plan of care and a written report will be faxed to both pediatrician and OB-GYN.  Prenatal consults, pump consults, therapeutic ultrasound, bottle refusal, and baby/toddler-only visits are also available.

Virtual consults:

Long before COVID-19, we began offering video consults over our HIPAA secure patient electronic healthcare record platform and are well-practiced in the nuances of this form of telemedicine. We are able to work with you to solve problems such as a painful latch, slow weight gain, pumping challenges, and low milk supply. We can also utilize videos and pictures to assess for tethered oral tissue and other structural problems.  In most cases, these consults are covered by commercial insurance plans.  Please check with your specific plan to confirm the details. We can provide you with some insurance codes upon request.

The following are recommendations for how to best prepare for a telehealth lactation consult:

We suggest that you make sure you have good lighting for the consult and a comfortable place to feed the baby.  Having another person there to assist with the phone/camera is very helpful as we may ask you to take videos of the baby's mouth and your positioning.  Obviously, we won't be able to use our highly sensitive scales to determine pre- and post-feed weights. However, if you have rent or own a scale we can guide you on how to do this.  While these consults don't take the place of a hands-on exam, you can get your questions answered from the comfort of your own home! Virtual consultations are 30 to 60 minutes. You will receive a care plan after the consultation.
